On the minds of many, Niger Delta depicts militancy, following the years-long militant operations in the region, which some termed environmental activism, though. But to the people of the region, Niger Delta epitomizes diverse heritage of music and dance culture, clothing culture, culinary culture, just to name but a few. The heterogenous disposition of the oil-rich region presupposes such multicultural diversity that deserves celebration in the forth-coming mega event tagged: Niger Delta Festival of Arts and Culture (NIDEFEST), coming up in Abuja this August.

The man behind this noble event is Comrade Peter John Etuk-Akpan JP, the Director-General of the Niger Delta Festival of Arts and Culture (NIDEFEST). His organizational experience dates back to his involvement with the National Youth Festival of Arts and Culture, NAYUFEST in 2005.

The Comrade spoke with OSIBAnews Network recently on his inspiration for NIDEFEST:

“This idea actually came to me during the militancy era in the Niger Delta Region. I told myself that if a festival could be organized amongst the 9 states of the Niger Delta, there could be a positive distraction from these vices, and attention focused on recognizing and celebrating the traditional and cultural identities of the Niger Deltans. Are the people really violent and unreasonable? The answer is ‘No!’..

There will also be discoveries in the course of this festival, among which is that the core values and interest of the Mangrove Dwellers are almost the same.

Then came the pronouncement by late President Alhaji Musa Yar A’dua to grant amnesty to the militants. This move resulted in the demobilization of the armed youths of the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria. So, NIDEFEST is to celebrate the struggle, the heritage as well as the resilient spirit of the region”
