The first Nigerian indigenous Chartered Accountant, Akintola Williams, has died at age 104. He died on Monday morning in his Ikoyi home in Lagos.

Chief Akintola Williams was the first Nigerian to have qualified as an Accountant. He pioneered Nigeria’s accounting profession and was instrumental in developing the country’s financial sector. He studied Accounting at the University of London, qualified as a Chartered Accountant in the year 1947. And by 1952, he had set up his own accounting firm in Nigeria, the popular Akintola Williams & Co., now known as Deloitte & Touche.

Chief Williams was born on August 9, 1919.
