Muslim-Muslim Ticket and Possible Jihad – the real issue of Bola Tinubu and Shetima

By Gloria Okezie-Okafor

When Bola Tinubu had indicated interest to be Running Mate to former president Mohammadu Buhari more than eight years back, Nigerians screamed. The issue was, both men were Muslims, and in a country consisting of several religious groups – even though dominated by Muslims and Christians, and some Traditional worshipers – there was a need to balance this.

For this reason, former Vice President Yemi Oshibanjo had to be picked to become Running Mate to Buhari. Despite the combination of Buhari and Oshibanjo, the country suffered grave terrorist attacks on a daily basis – the farmer and herder clash, Boko Haram insurgency, and scores of other attacks. These left hundreds and thousands of hundreds of Nigerians murdered in cold blood. No one was arrested or prosecuted. Instead, Nigerians woke up to the murderers being granted pardon and absolved into various units of the nation’s security force.

Heads of Service Chiefs and other parastatalls were commanded under Muslim leadership. Nigerians raised questions on this matter and as usual they were swept under the carpet. While these happen, indigenes of Southern Kaduna were grinded under the mill by terrorists as their then governor, Nasir El Rufai watched, and even admitted to be helpless in these attacks, despite giving ransoms to the killers on many occasions.

The killings were not limited to Kaduna alone; but were extended to Plateau, Benue, the North East, and then across the country. Before the end of Buhari’s two terms the number of Nigerians who died through terror attacks, far outweighs any number recorded in different parts of the world through natural or human disasters. Uptill this moment, no one was arrested following those attacks, instead they were either labelled conflicts between farmer and herders, or community clash. Several videos exist where victims of Southern Kaduna indigenes were given mass burial, without recourse to their family.

All these happened in a place they called home – the only country they ever laid claim to.

Fast-forward to the public outcry when Tinubu finally picked his running mate, Kashim Shetima on Muslim Muslim Ticket, and the parade of fake bishops – something which would never have been tolerated if it was done against our Muslim brothers by the Christian community; although the condemnation was unanimous from well meaning Nigerians, irrespective of religious, tribe and party affiliation.

In a recent audio prior to the election, Kashim Shetima was recalled to have made open threat against the Igbos through the proposed marriage between the North and the Southwest on economic and political supremacy. Shetima had accused former president Goodluck Jonathan of favouring the Igbos in his government. These issues were not resolved as Kashim Shetima went on to contest the position of the Vice President under APC. Indeed Nigerians have seen the proposed marriage between the North and the Southwest manifest.

To further buttress this agenda, former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El Rufai, had in a video which went viral, said Kaduna State have come full circle under Muslim Muslim leadership; and that this was the same ground that the presidency of Bola Ahmed Tinubu was endorsed.

As attention is diverted to the judiciary, and as Nigerians await a fair judgement on all the issues leveled against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the grounds of criminal charges, forfeitures and other salient issue, many seem to be forgetting a more crucial area – the threats to our security by those who now occupy sensitive positions in our nation; considering too, the recent Ministerial nominee of Nasir El Rufai, whom Bola Tinubu had at Chatham House delegated to answer questions bothering on security matters – despite Rufai’s inability to secure his own State then.

The current situation bedevilling Nigeria in just a few months of this new administration, points to the fact of putting the same people in a position that questions their capacity and concern for Nigerians. Some may say that recent appointments of Bola Tinubu includes large number of Christians, and also many may cite the fact that the wife of the president is also a Christian and a pastor, let’s not forget though that while El Rufai cried out to be helpless in the face of terrorists attacks in Southern Kaduna, the same El Rufai celebrated the feat accomplished by these terrorists against his own people. Those murdered were innocent citizens, women and little children, all killed in cold blood.

Sweeping the statements of El Rufai, Shetima, and even the actions of Bola Tinubu, when he gave orders supporting election violence and when he said he found no Christian worthy enough in the entire Northern region to become his vice, may just be ignoring a time bomb waiting to explode.
