There’s a lot of fearmongering regarding AI that’s needless and silly – like machines coming to life and blah blah blah… apocalypse, blah blah blah…

There’s also a lot of shady s#it regarding AI that really does need monitoring – like computers going through resumes without transparency or accountability to hiring laws.

Truth is that Artificial Intelligence is an unfortunate name for this piece of technology. It implies that we’re manufacturing intelligence. What we’re manufacturing are complex computations that can ingest insane amounts of data at an insane speed, and perform certain outcomes super fast based on the instructions it receives.

Like any other invention that advanced our ability to do things, be it fire, writing, the printing press, or the Internet, AI is just that – a tool. And like any other powerful tool, it can be used to our benefit and our harm, depending on how we use it.

Creating and containing fire keeps us warm and fed. It can also kill people. It’s a tool. It does whatever we do with it.

The printing press democratized education. It was also used to spread propaganda more widely and quickly. It’s a tool that can be used for good or for harm.

AI can diagnose Parkinson’s disease instantly by studying a patient’s voice. Its use in prevention and cure of diseases is exciting. It’s also a tool that can spread complete lies very quickly and sow mistrust and confusion.

I recommend John Oliver’s segment on AI for an informative and sobering look at it.

AI won’t solve our greatest challenge as a species, which is to build rational societies that are organized around the needs of humans and the planet, rather than greed.

Copied.
